The Big Five: Psychology's Consensus Model

The five-factor model β€” Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism (OCEAN) β€” emerged from decades of lexical research and is the most replicated personality framework in scientific psychology, holding up across cultures and languages far better than typology systems.

What your scores mean

Each trait is a continuous dimension, not a category: most people score near the middle. Conscientiousness is the strongest personality predictor of job performance and health behaviors; Neuroticism predicts vulnerability to stress; Openness correlates with creativity and intellectual curiosity. There are no "good" or "bad" profiles β€” traits carry trade-offs that suit different environments.

How is this different from MBTI-style tests? The Big Five uses continuous, empirically derived dimensions with high retest reliability, whereas type-based tests force people into boxes that around half of retakers switch out of within weeks.

Do personalities change? Gradually β€” people tend to grow more conscientious and agreeable and less neurotic with age.
